Life Lesson No. 6 – Compassion, Humor and Style.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m a recovering farm broadcaster.  Almost a year ago, I made one of the hardest decisions to-date. I left my dream job as AgriBusiness Director for 1470 WMBD and 1290 WIRL in Peoria and accepted a position at LG Seeds as their Marketing Coordinator. It was a big step, but at the time, it felt like it was a step in the right direction for many reasons. While I dearly miss farm broadcasting and the people I worked with, LG has been a great learning experience that has given me the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. My new role has also enabled me to try new things like blogging and podcasting…

One of the segments I used to do on the WIRL Noon Show was called “Confessions of a Farm Wife.” This is where my great friends, bloggers and fellow farmwives, Emily Webel and Holly Spangler, come into the story. Every Thursday, I would interview them about farm life, agricultural issues, events they had attended, recent blog posts and more. It was a different perspective on life on the farm and I loved every minute of it and so did listeners. When I moved to LG, it was one of the parts about my former life as a farm broadcaster I missed more than I ever thought possible. I missed our conversations and most of all, I missed my friends.

About a month into my new position at LG, Holly came up with a wonderful idea, podcasting. She knew of other bloggers who were successfully podcasting and thought, “Hey, this is something we can do!” After a few emails, texts and phone calls,  we “got the band back together” and the rest, shall we say is history.

Here we are recording live at the Women in Ag Conference. In Confessions Episode 6, we talk about Succession Planning and the importance of family communication.

Our podcast is unique because we each have different backgrounds,  life experiences and perspectives to share at the kitchen table every time we meet. I came across this quote from the late Maya Angelou, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” For those of you who have never listened to one of our podcasts, I would say Maya’s quote perfectly describes the stories we share. We are compassionate women who strive to thrive in life, are passionate about all things agriculture and share our stories with bits of humor and style.

Over Memorial Day weekend, we had the opportunity to meet and record our ninth podcast.  You can listen to it below. From blogging to broadcasting to podcasting, we are still a work in progress and any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you for listening!
